[EN] The thesis in question has focused on the sociolinguistic situation of the city of Kiev (Ukraine) and, specifically, on its organization in terms of functional distribution of Russian-Ukrainian bilingualism. Kiev, chosen as the central target of the study, has been considered as a linguistic community characterized by a historical unbalanced bilingualism, in which the modern national language policy could have created, since 1991, favorable conditions for the language space reorganization.
As the chief aims of this macrosynchronic correlational research we have proposed the definition of the leading social, stylistic and extralinguistic factors and social groups which favor the stratified usages of the languages in contact. Moreover, we have intended to verify whether a hypothetical generational variation is being occurred in the language practices of the speakers, as well as in their attitudes towards the languages functionality and symbolic value as a consequence of the sociopolitical change induced by the independence of Ukraine in 1991.
In view of these goals, a field work based on a representative sample has been carried out. By means of this, we have compared: (1.º) two age non-ontogenic groups, which represent a generational group born and educated during the soviet period, and a generational group born and educated during the independence period; (2.º) men and women, and (3.º) resident groups from different urban districts, which constitute diverse socioeconomic strata.
Thanks to the analysis proper, as well as to the results of the work, we have described the multidimensional sociolinguistic structure of the Ukrainian capital in terms of: the social variables output in the sociolinguistic variation; the dyaphasic, extralinguistic and social dependence of the code choices, and the different social characteristics speakers attitudes towards the functionality and value of the languages in contact.
