[EN]After the independence fight against Spain, the new Argentine Republic found another border, but this time in the inside. The limit between Civilization and Barbarism is also the frontier between two worlds, one of them inhabitated by men they don’t consider Argentines. They considered these natives like foreign people while at the same time they welcomed European immigrants to settle in the new conquered territories. Disappeared at the end of 19th century, that border is part of the Argentine literature from the beginning. One text of Roberto Bolaño, «el gaucho insufrible», revisits the old frontier in order to show how it is like today.; [ES]Una vez lograda la independencia política, Argentina descubre la frontera interior que divide el país no solo en dos zonas geográficas, sino también en dos conceptos, civilización y barbarie. Uno de esos mundos es el que está habitado por hombres que no son susceptibles de ser considerados argentinos en la nueva República. Mientras el indígena pasa a ser denominado extranjero, el modelo del país que se quiere construir necesita de la llegada de inmigrantes europeos que se instalen en los territorios conquistados. Desaparecida a finales del XIX, la frontera acompaña a la literatura argentina desde sus comienzos. Un texto de Roberto Bolaño, «el gaucho insufrible», vuelve sobre el viejo límite para mostrarlo tal como es hoy.

A Tale of the Day (1801), y The Heroine, or Adventures of a Fair Romance Reader (1813), y su contribución a la tradición quijotesca en la literatura británica a través de la concepción del Quijote como ser doblemente alienado, tanto desde el punto de vista epistemológico como político, y de su lectura negativa de la extranjerización del personaje quijotesco en el contexto de la respuesta a la Revolución francesa en Gran Bretaña, en claro contraste con la interpretación radical e idealizada del Quijote desarrollada de forma paralela en esta época.; [EN]The present paper discusses three anti-jacobin novels, The History of Sir George Warrington, or the Political Quixote (1797), The Infernal Quixote. A Tale of the Day (1801), and The Heroine, or Adventures of a Fair Romance Reader (1813), and their contribution to the tradition of quixotism in British literature by means of their conception of the Quixote as a doubly-estranged character, both from an epistemological and a political point of view, and of their negative reading of the quixotic foreignness in the context of the aftermath to the French Revolution in Great Britain, in clear contrast to the radical and idealized interpretation of the Quixote developed coevally at this time.

[EN]The Caribbean is a land of migration. The displacement of thousands of people who arrived to this land from Europe, Africa and the far east, voluntary or forced, caused the feeling of uprooting among them. Therefore, the image of the stranger is a central figure and has been represented from different perspectives. In this paper, we want to analyze, taking into account the imagologic principles and the contributions of Caribbean theorists about the topic, how literatures form the Caribbean and its diasporas have characterized the stranger, which function has in both literatures and how the narrative help to break or perpetuate prejudices and stereotypes about people whose origins are in an island of the archipelago.; [ES]El Caribe es tierra de migraciones. El desplazamiento forzado o voluntario de miles de personas que llegaron de Europa, África y el Lejano Oriente engendró por largo tiempo el sentimiento de desarraigo entre sus habitantes. La imagen del extranjero es, por tanto, una figura central que ha sido representada desde diferentes aristas en este trabajo pretendemos analizar, desde la perspectiva imagológica y de los aportes que realizan sobre el tema estudiosos de la región, la manera cómo las literaturas del Caribe y de sus diásporas han caracterizado la figura del extranjero, qué función cumple en una y otra literatura, cómo contribuyen las obras a romper o perpetuar el prejuicio o los estereotipos acerca del sujeto cuyo origen se encuentra en una isla del archipiélago.

[ES]En el presente trabajo se lleva a cabo una comparación de la imagen que se hicieron de España los viajeros y observadores germanohablantes que la visitaron a principios del siglo XX –un país empobrecido, que salía de una grave crisis nacional y enfrentaba otras– con la que nos presentan entre setenta y noventa años después, mucho más positiva en cualquiera de los aspectos considerados. Base del trabajo han sido los documentos escritos que nos han legado (diarios, artículos, cartas, informes, libros). Si en las primeras décadas del siglo pasado en lo fundamental detectan el atraso y hasta a veces el carácter no europeo de algunas de las realidades del país –con excepciones: Rilke, Thelen, W. Krauss–, la percepción de la España de 1990/2000 puede resultar positiva en exceso.; [EN]The article deals with the impression German-speaking travellers and observers gained of the early 20th century Spain; an impoverished country that was leaving behind a deep national crisis and was facing many other crisis. This situation is compared to the impression of Spain between seventy and ninety years later, which is much more positive in every aspect. The present article is supported by a legacy of written documents (diaries, articles, letters, reports, books). In the first two decades of the former century the writers showed a backward country and at times even in some aspects of the country a non-european character. However, there are exceptions such as Rilke, Thelen and W. Krauss. The modern perception of Spain during 1990 and 2000 might be excessively positive at times.

[EN]This paper, after introducing briefly George Ticknor and his european tour, carries out the analysis of his Diarios de viaje por España, which this famous American Hispanist wrote during his visit to the Iberian Peninsula in 1818. These journals, in part unpublished and untranslated, show a Spain that is overcoming the Spanish war of Independence and the national landscape and peasantry, which the author studies carefully searching for the essence of the Spanish popular character. All these issues are thus part of this study on Diarios de viaje por España by George Ticknor.; [ES]El presente trabajo aborda, tras una breve presentación de George Ticknor y su viaje por Europa, el análisis de sus Diarios de viaje por España, que redactó durante la visita a la Península Ibérica que el famoso hispanista norteamericano llevó a cabo en 1818. Estos Diarios, en parte inéditos y sin traducción hasta el momento, reflejan una España que estaba dejando atrás la Guerra de la Independencia española, así como el paisaje y paisanaje nacionales, que el autor analiza con mucha atención en busca de la esencia del espíritu popular español. Todas estas cuestiones forman parte, pues, de este estudio sobre los Diarios de viaje por España de George Ticknor.
