The argument begins with an examination of how ideas relating to human sexuality contribute to a new vision of humanity grounded in Enlightenment thought. Links are made between theorizing elsewhere in Europe and the expression of concepts of sexuality at variance with official thinking in Spain but which can be observed in cases preserved in Inquisition files. Having established this intellectual and cultural framework, the collection of poems entitled Los besos de amor by Juan Meléndez Valdés is analysed in an attempt to demonstrate how the author’s exploration of human sexuality defies the restrictions placed on such writings by the Spanish Inquisition, with the result that Meléndez’s verses could not be published in his lifetime.; El artículo pretende demostrar cómo ciertos textos literarios dieciochescos de tema erótico dejan constancia de los cambios ideológicos asociados con las Luces en Europa. El argumento empieza examinando cómo las ideas relacionadas con la sexualidad forman parte del nuevo concepto de la humanidad propio de la mentalidad ilustrada. A continuación se hacen calas en las ideas teóricas sobre el tema planteadas en otras partes de Europa y su relación con la expresión de conceptos sobre la sexualidad contrarios al pensamiento ortodoxo en España, pero que se evidencian en los archivos inquisitoriales. The present study identifies this subject matter with the aesthetics of the cosmic sublime which characterizes a major strand of contemporary European philosophical poetry. In particular, the article highlights specific texts –in addition to ones from the European poets traditionally cited– which may have contributed to Meléndez’s concept of the cosmic sublime, and draws attention to the presence of this thematic strand throughout Meléndez’s poetic career (1780-1814), analyzing the chosen poems from the perspective of the literary, philosophical and religious context of the cosmic sublime./n ; El propio Meléndez Valdés señala en 1797 que la contemplación de la inmensidad, variedad, orden del universo y cadena de los seres es uno de los principales asuntos de su poesía filosófica y una vía de renovación de la poesía española. During the period 1775-1780 they met regularly in the cell of the Prior Diego González. There grew a firm friendship, based on the same poetic and ideological tastes which had affinities with Jansenism. The present study attempts to outline the essential biographical characteristics of Antonio José de Alba and his relationship with Meléndez.; Desde 1772 Meléndez Valdés estuvo ligado al convento-colegio de San Agustín de Salamanca, de los agustinos calzados, donde contó con amigos aficionados a la poesía, como los frailes Diego González (prior), Juan Fernández de Rojas, Andrés del Corral, Pedro Madariaga y José Antonio de Alba. Durante el quiquenio de 1775-1780 tuvieron una tertulia en la celda del prior Diego González. Las bodas de Camacho, el rico, the author’s only dramatic work, is viewed in terms of his friendship with Jovellanos. The pastoral drama obeying neoclassical norms provoked opposition as well as admiration. Meléndez’s letters reveal the significance of friendship for him, while the fragment of the Cartas turcas illustrates his desire to experiment. A comparison of prologues to editions of poetry (1785 and 1820) brings out increasing self-confidence, while entry into the Real Academia Española (1810) evidenced his official recognition. More substantial coverage is given to the analysis of legal texts which demonstrate Meléndez’s humanism while not transgressing contemporary legal practice, while his efforts to reform institutions for the poor in Ávila illustrate clerical obscurantism and self-interest clashing with humanitarian principles./n ; El estudio trata de varias contribuciones de Meléndez Valdés a la cultura española de las Luces, no solamente de carácter literario, sino también sobre la jurisprudencia y asistencia a los pobres.
