Movies remain a popular form of entertainment, and this artistic medium has great potential for cultural impact due to its ready availability through broadcast media, internet, rental and purchase. Teaching medical students about dermatology through commercially available films allows participants to learn more about common and uncommon skin diseases, and creates an opportunity to critically examine the role skin diseases play in these productions. A four week, didactic class offered at The University of Texas Medical Branch is described. Sharing this information with other medical educators may make dermatology education more accessible to medical students. Las películas siguen siendo una forma popular de entretenimiento, y este medio artístico tiene un gran potencial impacto cultural, debido a su disponibilidad a través de los medios de radiodifusión, internet, alquiler y compra. La enseñanza de la Dermatología de los estudiantes de Medicina a través de películas disponibles en el mercado permite a los participantes aprender más sobre las enfermedades de la piel comunes y no comunes, y crea una oportunidad para examinar de manera crítica el papel que las enfermedades de la piel juegan en estas producciones. Se describe la clase didáctica que ofrece la Universidad de Texas Medical Branch en la cuarta semana. La justificación, con base filosófica, muestra la utilidad del formato cinematográfico para hacer presentes y comprender motivaciones y acciones. Las reflexiones que provoca la experiencia de empatía con los personajes es el inicio para abordar el tema del reconocimiento. El cual en el marco médico supone tener en cuenta las diferentes dimensiones en las que nos relacionamos las personas. Reconocer al otro, tal y como se nos presenta, es atender a las diferencias y procurar una mejor relación entre el médico y el paciente. El análisis de varios filmes podrá servir de estímulo para la consideración del reconocimiento como uno de los términos claves para comprender cómo nos relacionamos dentro de las sociedades con pluralidad de formas de vida y cosmovisiones. Consideramos que el esfuerzo de tratar estos temas deriva en una mayor proximidad con el paciente y una mejor atención. [EN] Along the following lines we propose the use of films for educational purposes. Our main argument, based on philosophical grounds, shows the use of film format to emphasize and understand people’s motivations and actions. The reflections brought about by empathy with the characters are the first step in the approach of the topic of recognition, a term that in the medical framework involves taking into account the various aspects of inter-human relationships. Recognition of “the other” as he/she stands, implies addressing differences and providing a better doctor-patient relationship. The analysis of several films might encourage the acknowledgement of recognition as one of the key concepts to understand our ways of relating within plural societies with different lifestyles and different outlooks on the world. We believe that the effort made in dealing with such topics results in greater closeness to the patient and, therefore, better care. Un contexto biográfico, compatibilizado entre varios autores que refieren de diversa manera algunos momentos de su vida, da cuenta del porqué de su heterodoxia profesional y de su eventual legado a la Medicina y provee, a la vez, un marco referencial para el filme Mesmer (1994), igualmente de discutida factura, permitiendo cotejar la verdad histórica con las modificaciones que, alejadas de ella, suelen deberse a necesidades relacionadas con el lenguaje cinematográfico. Filme de época, con vestuario ajustado a la misma, nos acerca a un médico que para algunos fue un adelantado de la Medicina y para otros, un seudocientífico más cercano al ocultismo y a la charlatanería.; [EN] This paper focuses on a controversial figure in Medicine: Franz Anton Mesmer, who lived during the 18th century and the early 19th century. A biographical context, supported in different authors, explains his professional heterodoxy and his eventual legacy to Medicine, providing simultaneously a referential framework for the equally debatable film Mesmer (1994) and allowing a comparison between the historical truthfulness and the non historical changes made in favour of cinematographic language. Si bien su origen es rural, donde se transmite a través de insectos vectores de la familia Reduviidae, actualmente se ha urbanizado y se está globalizando a través de la infección interhumana, principalmente transmisión congénita, transfusional y por transplantes. El documental Chagas, un mal escondido, de Ricardo Preve, enfoca ambos aspectos de la enfermedad: el rural, desarrollado en el film en el norte de la República Argentina y tangencialmente en otros países de América Latina, y el urbano y global, con entrevistas a médicos de Estados Unidos e investigadores en Europa. En Estados Unidos se desarrolla una parte importante de la película, que muestra la peor evolución de la enfermedad, que es la muerte por cardiopatía chagásica que, al ser un hecho real que ocurre durante la filmación, le otorga más dramatismo. En el presente trabajo se abordan temas específicos de la Enfermedad de Chagas, desde el punto de vista biomédico, alternando comentarios acerca de los rasgos más salientes de la película que tengan relación con dichos aspectos. Sobre el final se trata brevemente el film Casas de Fuego y algún aspecto ilustrativo de la vida del Dr. Salvador Mazza y de la Misión de Estudios de Patología Regional Argentina (MEPRA), temas sobre los cuales ya existe una publicación en esta Revista. [EN] Chagas disease, whose aetiological agent is Trypanosoma cruzi, is one of the main endemic diseases in Latin America, ranking fourth regarding the number of lost life years due to death or disability in the area; nevertheless, it is among the so-called “neglected diseases”. Despite its rural origin, where it is transmitted through vector insects belonging to the Reduviidae family, it has nowadays also become a problem in urbanized areas and is becoming globalized through inter-human transmission, above all congenital, but also through transfusions and transplants. Chagas, a Hidden Affliction (Chagas, Un mal escondido), a documentary by Ricardo Preve, focuses on both aspects of the disease: the rural and the global one, including interviews with North American doctors and European researchers. A significant part of the film takes place in the USA, showing the worst consequence of the evolution of the disease, which is death by chagasic cardiopathy which, being a reality that takes place during filming, increases the sense of drama. In this paper we approach specific topics related to Chagas disease from a biomedical point of view, including comments related to the highlights of the film that are connected with such aspects. Towards the end, there is mention of the film Houses of Fire (Casas de fuego) and of certain illustrative aspects concerning the life of Dr Salvador Mazza and the Argentine Mission of Regional Pathology Studies (MEPRA), topics that have already been dealt with in this.
