It argues that Unamuno saw the creation of a Hispanic identity as a long-term project based on a relationship of differentiation and integration between Spain and the other Spanish-speaking nations. Muy recientemente, las metáforas con que Unamuno ilustró el concepto intrahistoria han atraído la atención de Hoyle (2000), quien las ha considerado ejemplos señeros del Modernismo, reavivando así el interés de esta obra. Aunque Ribas (1971) cotejó el concepto intrahistoria con el Volksgeist de Hegel, En torno al casticismo es horra de estudios que escruten la disección del Volksgeist español que en ella se ofrece. Este artículo describe el proceso compositivo de En torno al casticismo, en función del pensamiento filosófico, historiológico y político del autor, y pormenoriza la concepción de los caracteres nacionales que Unamuno detalla en esta obra, y la presenta como un eslabón en la sucesión de réplicas y contrarréplicas que Unamuno y Ganivet intercambiaron en sus primeras obras, antes de 1898: España filosofIca contemporánea, En torno al casticismo, Idearium español y El porvenir de España.; [EN] Unamuno's En torno al casticismo has often been regarded a work deeply concerned with Spain. Hoyle (2000) has recently argued that some of the metaphors with which Unamuno illustrated his concept intrahistoria in En torno al casticismo are some of the neatest ones in Spanish Modernism. Albeit Ribas (1971) succeeded in his comparison of Unamtino's intrahistoria and Hegel's Volksgeist, En torno al casticismo wants for a critical analysis of the Spanish Volksgeist which it presents. The aim of this article is 1) to scrutinise the philosophical, historical and political bias which were influential on Unamuno at the time of writing En torno al casticismo, 2) to examine Unamuno's view of the Spanish psychology as it is portrayed in this work, and 3) to present it as a part of the continuum of responses which Unamuno and Ganivet gave to one another in their earlier works, i.e. in España filosófica contemporánea, En torno al casticismo, Idearium español, and El porvenir de España. Éstos y otros interrogantes los hemos ido solucionando, dentro de nuestras posibilidades, en este escrito. Hemos analizado su relación con las mujeres de su familia, con las mujeres de fuera de su entorno y hemos abordado el personaje femenino por excelencia como es la Tía Tula, donde Unamuno vuelca toda su sabiduría sobre la mujer y lo femenino. Terminamos con las opiniones que otros autores tenían y tienen sobre el concepto de mujer en Unamuno.; [EN] We have always been studying the political, religious, philosophical, literary, etc. thought. But, what did D. Miguel think about women? How can we describe his relationships with the other sex? How was his feminist conception of life embodied in his writings? We give an answer to these and other questions throughout this writing, accorcling to our possibilities. We analyse his relationships with the women in his family and the women outside his environment; we also deal wiht his female character par excellence, La Tía Tula: Unamuno gathers all his knowledge about women and the feminine matter on this character. We end this writing with some opinions that other authors had and have about the concept of women according to Unamuno.
