Thus, the Old and the New Testament are the essential background for his análisis of spiritual motherhood in Dos madres and La tía Tula, respectively. A unique, original rewriting of Genesis 29-30, Dos madres heavily relies on its Jewish source in both theme and main characters, namely Raquel and Berta. As for La tía Tula, it reads as the Marian dogma revisited in a complex, sophisticated way; hence the unmistakably Christian atmosphere that pervades the novel. Common to Dos madres and La tía Tula are surrogate maternity and vicarious motherhood as a means to explore one of Unamuno's themes of choice: spiritual parenthood vs merely biological perpetuation. The analysis takes into account other works of the salmantinian writer that can help to complete the ideas of the basic Nicodemus the Pharisee.
