¡Si acatamos la constitución, resistiremos!: Mayas Yucatecos durante la Independencia

Abstract

This article analyzes the Latin American independence period through the lens of the silenced actors —the indigenous majority group of the Yucatan peninsula. The Mayas of Yucatan lived the process of transformation fro subjects to citizens by respecting the Constitution, requesting that the constitutional principles pertaining to them were applied, and taking active part in the civic formation of the new </span><em><span style="font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: ";Garamond-LightItalic";,";serif";; mso-bidi-font-family: Garamond-LightItalic; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;" lang="EN-US">Ayuntamientos</span></em><span style="font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: ";Garamond-Light";,";serif";; mso-bidi-font-family: Garamond-Light; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;" lang="EN-US">. This change of attitude, resulting from the legitimacy that the Spanish Parliament of Cadiz rendered to all citizens, translated into the same capacity of representation to subaltern groups and dominant sectors alike. This study will explore the extent to which the acceptance of the new constitutional order is, in fact, an act of indigenous resistance that represents one more submission strategy that will eventually lead to the 1847 Caste War.

El presente artículo analiza la etapa independentista desde la óptica de los actores silenciados, el grupo indígena mayoritario en la península, los mayas yucatecos, que observan el paso de ser súbditos a ciudadanos acatando la Constitución, solicitando que se cumplan las prerrogativas que se les concedieron y participando cívicamente en la creación de los ayuntamientos. Este cambio de actitud, posibilitado por la legitimidad que les otorgaban las Cortes de Cádiz, dio a los grupos subalternos la misma capacidad de representación que a los sectores dominantes. Estudiaremos hasta qué punto acatar el nuevo orden constitucional fue un acto de resistencia, una etapa más de sometimiento que terminaría estallando en 1847 en la Guerra de Castas.
