The Intellectual Spear: Lorraine Hansberry's Les Blancs

Les Blancs was her final statement about her position and an answer to Jean Genet's play The Blacks. Les Blancs is her only play taking place in Africa, thus, using symbolism and signifying, dance and music as dramatic elements characteristic of both African American and African cultures. Like Bertolt Brecht's epic theater, Hansberry uses another country to achieve a distancing effect in her audience —not only Blacks, but also Whites— who must question their reality in order to stop being passive and and take sides.
