Formulating the Aesthetics of African-American Playwrights: The Resonance of the Black Liberation and the Black Theatre Movements

Abstract

[ES] Este ensayo muestra cómo las dramaturgas afroamericanas añadieron una nueva dimensión a la percepción del varón observada en las obras teatrales del Black Theatre Movement, creando una diferencia y ampliando la perspectiva de una estética negra. Sus obras teatrales apartaron las restricciones del realismo creando formas teatrales totalmente innovadoras que expresaban la realidad de la comunidad negra que era parte de las experiencias personales de estas mujeres. [EN] This essay shows how African American women playwrights added a new dimension to the male perception observed in the plays of the Black Theatre Movement creating a difference and widening the perspective of Black aesthetics. Their theatre plays thrust beyond the restrictions of realism to innovative theatrical forms which expressed a Black reality that was part of those women’s experience.
