The decline of the Spanish nobility: Credit and administration (1790-1850)

Abstract

[ES] Los nobles eran muy dependientes de sus administradores y los administradores de fincas y esto aumenta con la concentración de propiedades en manos de unos pocos. Hubo un aumento en los costes de gestión y también hubo un aumento en el gasto de los nobles disparados por el sistema de crédito que les favorecía y por el aumento de la propiedad. La elección patrimonialista había alcanzado su punto más alto debido a que el sistema de mayorazgo ya no era viable. Los propietarios antiguos se enfrentan a dificultades financieras a finales del siglo XVIII y principios del siglo XIX debido a los altos impuestos y la falta de pago de las rentas feudales de las clases bajas.

[EN] The nobles were very dependent on their managers and administrators of estates and this increases with the concentration of property in the hands of a few. There was an increase in management costs and there was also an increase in spending of nobles triggered by the credit system that favored them and the increase of the property. The choice patrimonial had reached its highest point since the primogeniture system was no longer viable. The former owners are facing financial difficulties in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century due to high taxes and lack of payment of feudal dues of the lower classes.
