Maranhão na monarquia hispânica: intercâmbios, guerra e navegação nas fronteiras das Índias de Castela (1580-1655)

Abstract

[ES] El objetivo de este trabajo es discutir el papel reservado a la América Portuguesa en los proyectos atlánticos de la Monarquía Hispánica. Utilizamos como estudio de caso el análisis sobre la navegación y expansión civil-militar hacia el extremo Norte del territorio luso-americano entre los reinados de Felipe II y D. Juan IV. Nuestro objeto de estudio, el Estado de “Maranhão e Grão-Pará”, fue una unidad administrativa separada de la jurisdicción del Estado de Brasil. En la geopolítica de la Monarquía Universal, el llamado “Maranhão” era una inmensa región portuguesa que hacía frontera con el Virreinato del Perú y el mar del Caribe, por eso ha sido considerado un rincón estratégico para los intereses de las dos Coronas. Por lo tanto, este trabajo desarrolla tres temas principales: 1. La guerra por el dominio del Atlántico; 2. La circulación de ideas, personas y productos entre las dos partes de la Monarquía; 3. La expansión hacia el Oeste durante la primera mitad del siglo XVII

[EN] The purpose of this dissertation is to discuss the role reserved for the Portuguese American in the Atlantic project of the Spanish Monarchy. We used as a case study the analysis on the navigation and civil-military expansion toward the extreme North of the Portuguese territory between the reigns of Philip II and D. John IV. Our object of study, the State of “Maranhão and Grão-Pará”, was a administrative unit separate from the jurisdiction of the State of Brazil. In the geopolitics of the Universal Monarchy, the called “Maranhão” was a huge Portuguese region border to the Viceroyalty of Peru and the Caribbean Sea, so it has been considered a strategic corner to the interests of the two Crowns. Therefore, this work develops three main themes: 1. The war for control of the Atlantic 2. The circulation of ideas, people and products between the two parts of the Monarchy, 3. The westward expansion during the first half of the seventeenth century
