Improving Estimations in Software Projects with Data Mining Techniques

Abstract

[EN] Estimation is a critical task in the software project management area. Early and reliable software estimations have a positive impact in software project scheduling, cost and quality. The drawbacks of the classical estimation methods used in numerous organizations have motivated the research in new techniques that avoid these problems. Some studies carried out have demonstrated that data mining algorithms provide predictive models with significant advantages with respect to traditional ones. In this work several data mining methods are described and used to create and validate models for software size estimation using attributes obtained in early stages of the life cycle.

[ES] La estimación es una tarea fundamental para la gestión de proyectos de software. Una estimaciones de software temprana y fiable tiene un efecto positivo en el impacto del proyecto, costo y calidad. Los inconvenientes de los métodos de estimación clásicos utilizados en numerosas organizaciones han motivado la investigación de nuevas técnicas que eviten estos problemas. Algunos estudios realizados han demostraron que el empleo de algoritmos de minería de datos proporcionan modelos predictivos con ventajas significativas con respecto a los tradicionales. En este trabajo se describen y se usan varios métodos de minería de datos para crear y validar los modelos de estimación de software.
