Male Violence Against Women and Hybrid Identities in Post-Apartheid South African Black Theatre

Abstract

[ES] En este ensayo se analiza el papel fundamental que juegan las dramaturgas negras sudafricanas en la creación de una conciencia orientada al cambio social; la representación de las principales preocupaciones de las mujeres negras sobre abusos machistas, la violencia y discriminación racista de la sociedad sudafricana; y la consiguiente lucha de las mujeres negras para encontrar su propio espacio y dignidad como mujeres, mientras afirman su identidad como exponentes de una nueva sociedad híbrida la Sudáfrica actual.

[EN] This essay analyzes the pivotal role of contemporary black South African women playwrights in creating audience awareness geared towards social change; the depiction of black women’s main concerns on suffering male abuse and violence and society’s racist discrimination; and the ensuing struggle of black women to find their own space and dignity as women while asserting their identity as exponents of a new hybridized society in contemporary South Africa.
