La concepción estético-filosófica de la música en Istitutioni harmoniche de Gioseffo Zarlino

Abstract

[ES] Gioseffo Zarlino reflexiona sobre las innovaciones musicales de la época en el contexto humanista recurriendo a la filosofía griega antigua, para otorgarle un fundamento racional a la teoría musical. No obstante apela, a la vez, a otras tradiciones del pasado: mitología griega, literatura greco-latina, tradición bíblica, tradición cristiana. En el modo de pensar de Zarlino se produce la confluencia de todas estas líneas sin la intención de estructurar lógicamente los distintos aportes, sino con un propósito instrumental: retomar aquellas ideas y conceptos que le permitieran formular una teoría para fundamentar las transformaciones de la música de su tiempo. Se analizará una selección de capítulos de la primera parte de Istitutioni harmoniche (1589) donde se puede apreciar la confluencia de tradiciones. El intento de encontrar una fundamentación racional de la teoría musical se yuxtapone a referencias míticas de la antigüedad greco-latina y a consideraciones religiosas judeo-cristianas. El concepto de musica mundana de origen pitagórico deviene central para la argumentación. Luego se examinará la manifestación de esta dualidad de tradiciones en la representación pictórica de la música y la plasmación escénico-musical de la concepción estético-filosófica de la música de Zarlino en los Intermezzi (1589) de Giovanni de’ Bardi.

[EN] Gioseffo Zarlino reflects on the musical innovations of his time within the humanist sphere turning to the ancient Greek philosophy in order to give a rational foundation to the musical theory. Nevertheless, he also considers other traditions of the past: Greek mythology, Greek-Latin literature, biblical tradition, Christian tradition. All these lines converge in Zarlino's thinking, without the aim of organizing those different contributions in a logical way, but with an instrumental purpose: choosing those ideas and concepts which enable him to pose a theory in order to ground the contemporary musical transformations. The analysis will be focused on a selection of chapters of the first part of Istitutioni harmoniche (1589), where the confluence of traditions can be appreciated. Zarlino juxtaposes the attempt to find a rational foundation of the musical theory with mythical references from Greek-Latin antiquity and Jewish-Christian religious considerations. The concept of musica mundana, which proceeds from Pythagorean tradition, becomes the core of the argumentation. After that, both the manifestation of these duality of traditions in the pictorial representation of music and the scenic-musical configuration of Zarlino's aesthetic-philosophical conception of music in Giovanni de’ Bardi's Intermezzi (1589) will be examined.
