La historiografía Yugoslava y la Guerra Civil española

Abstract

This article examines a national historiographic tradition relatively unknown in Spain. It differs from the mainstream tradition in former Soviet bloc countries. The author first discusses the number of Yugoslav volunteers in Spain (among whom Tito was never present) and explains to Spanish readers the meaning of the Spanish Civil War with regard to the construction of a new Yugoslav identity, in the wake of Tito’s victory after the second world war and the break with Stalin. Veterans of the Spanish conflict held high positions in Tito’s Yugoslavia and contributed to maintaining the memory and meaning of their commitment. The article ends with a reference to the grotesque exploitation of several myths by both left and right-wing forces in those States resulting from the disintegration of former Yugoslavia.

Este artículo aborda una tradición historiográfica totalmente desconocida en España y que difiere de las orientaciones de la de los antiguos países de la Europa central y del este bajo los sistemas socialistas. El autor parte de una discusión sobre el número de voluntarios yugoslavos que acudieron a España (entre los que nunca figuró Tito) y explica a los lectores españoles la importancia de la Guerra Civil española en la construcción de una identidad yugoslava tras la victoria de Tito en la segunda guerra mundial y la ruptura con Stalin. Los antiguos voluntarios ocuparon cargos de gran relevancia en la Yugoslavia titista y contribuyeron, a través de su asociación, a mantener enhiesto el recuerdo y la significación para la misma de la lucha en España. El artículo termina con la explotación de ciertos mitos perdurables por sectores de la izquierda y de la derecha tras la desintegración de la antigua Yugoslavia.
