La impronta de Esparta en el humanismo y la utopía del siglo XVI

Abstract

[EN] In the 16th century the ancient Sparta was, as a state, an explicit political reference not only for theorists who, with their strong links to the classical past, sought above all social and constitutional stability for Renaissance republics with ambitious geopolitical designs, but also for others who opposed in their writings the growing support for absolute monarchy. As an idyllic and timeless society, formed by citizens who were models of freedom and civic virtues, Sparta was also veiled inspiration for utopians who dreamed of a better, ideal world, a refuge in which to escape the corrupt and mundane reality surrounding them.

[ES] En el siglo XVI la antigua Esparta fue, como Estado, referente político explícito bien para los teorizadores que, con poderosos anclajes en el pasado clásico, buscaban ante todo la estabilidad social y constitucional para repúblicas renacentistas con ambiciosos diseños geopolíticos, bien para aquellos otros que en sus obras se oponían al creciente absolutismo monárquico. Como sociedad, idílica y atemporal, integrada por ciudadanos modélicos en cuanto a libertad y virtudes cívicas, Esparta fue también velada inspiración para los utópicos que soñaron un mundo mejor, ideal, un refugio en el que poder escapar de la corrompida y mundana realidad que les envolvía.
