El potencial filosófico del concepto de carácter en Sennett

Abstract

This article aims to explore the topicality of the concept of character, which has been linked to ethics from its origin. It is approached through the lens of the contemporary renowned sociologist Richard Sennett. The novelty of this approach is that it defines the position of character formation in relation to the institutional contexts –especially the sphere of work– in which the daily lives of people unfold. In recent times, these contexts are undergoing profound changes that put the character strength to the test.

En este artículo se pretende explorar la actualidad de un concepto tan ligado desde sus orígenes a la ética como es el de carácter, si bien a través del prisma de un sociólogo de renombre en nuestros días, Richard Sennett. Lo interesante de esta aproximación es que sitúa la formación del carácter en relación a los contextos institucionales -especialmente el ámbito del trabajo- en los que se desenvuelve la vida cotidiana de las personas, y que en los últimos tiempos están atravesando cambios profundos, poniendo a prueba la fortaleza del carácter.
