| es_ES |
dc.description.abstract | Family caregivers of people with Early-onset Alzheimer's Disease face several challenges, including the lack of adequate support services because professionals and the community, in general, are unaware of their specific needs. The challenges become greater when the disease is genetically inherited, and there are multiple affected members in several generations. This is why it is urgent to expand the research on the experience of caring for a young adult with hereditary dementia. The aim of this mixed method study is to understand how the experience of family caregivers of people with Early-onset Alzheimer's Disease caused by E280A mutation is configured. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and questionnaires were applied to 50 participants to examine anxiety, depression, burden, self-efficacy, social support, resilience and coping strategies. Two emergent dimensions were found: other life experiences that interfere with the care, and representations about the disease. The analyzes allowed us to identify psychological risk and protective factors to the well-being of this group of caregivers. The mediating role of self-efficacy for controlling upsetting thoughts in the relationship between kinship, anxiety, depression and burden is highlighted. Also, coping strategies that are associated with increase or decrease of these three outcomes are indicated. One of the main needs, especially in young female caregivers, is to receive consultation and professional accompaniment to continue or return to their personal projects, during and after care. Likewise, support is required for the entire family group in order to maintain cohesion and favor both adaptation and mutual help. These findings will serve to guide the services and programs aimed at this group, in order to ameliorate the negative impacts of prolonged family care and stimulate it to be a rewarding and enriching experience. | EN |
