Abstract

In the late 1930s, in the context of the Great Depression,Disney Studios began work on its first block of animated feature films. One of the motivators that would lead to the change in format would be the limitations offered by short films for plot development. Consequently, based on the experience in the Silly Symphonies series, short films produced between 1928 and 1939 in which music was the backbone of the plot, the studio team would carry out the first five feature films in the history of animation. In them it becomes clear that the series of symphonies would function as an experimental laboratory, not only in the animation plane, but also in the musical field, in such a way that, to a greater or lesser extent, in all the tapes we can locate arisen elements and sketched in several of these short films both prior to and contemporaneous with the production process. Throughout the article we will focus on making these influences visible and analyzing in order to highlight this transfer of material that would take place, specifically, around the musical section between the Silly Symphonies and this first group of feature films of the Disney company.

A finales de los años treinta, en el contexto de la Gran Depresión, los Estudios Disney comenzarían a trabajar en su primer bloque de largometrajes de animación. Uno de los motivantes que propiciaría el cambio de formato sería superar las limitaciones que ofrecían los cortometrajes para el desarrollo argumental. En consecuencia, partiendo de la experiencia en la serie de Silly Symphonies, cortometrajes producidos entre 1928 y 1939 en los que la música constituía el eje vertebral del argumento, el equipo de los estudios llevaría a cabo las cinco primeras películas de larga duración de la historia de la animación. En ellas se hace patente que la serie de sinfonías funcionaría como laboratorio experimental, no solo en el plano de la animación, sino también en el campo musical, de tal forma que, en mayor o menor medida, en todas las cintas podemos localizar elementos surgidos y esbozados en varios de estos cortometrajes, tanto previos como coetáneos al proceso de producción. A lo largo del artículo nos centraremos en visibilizar y analizar estas influencias con el fin de poner de manifiesto esta transferencia de material que se llevaría a cabo, en concreto, en torno al apartado musical entre las Silly Symphonies y en este primer grupo de largometrajes de la compañía Disney.
