This article analyzes the image of the Italian Mafioso as a stereotype on which Italianism was based in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. That generic and offensive approach has continued over time and has created problems of assimilation for the Italian immigrant in the United States and caused his ghettoization in the Little Italies present in various American cities until his later emancipation.
In questo articolo si analizza l'immagine dell'italiano mafioso come stereotipo su cui si è fondata l'italianità negli Stati Uniti di inizio Novecento. Quell'accostamento generico e offensivo si è protratto nel tempo e ha creato problemi di assimilazione all'immigrante italiano negli Stati Uniti e ne ha causato la ghettizzazione nelle Little Italies presenti in varie città americane sino alla sua posteriore emancipazione.
