Abstract

This article will study a series of books that recreate through biography and fiction the experiences of the North American soldiers in the Vietnam war. These works, much better that all the texts written by politicians, members of the military or historians, succeed in showing what the war meant for a whole country, the United States of America. The texts selected (First Blood by David Morrell, Paco's Story by Larry Curtis Heinemann, Born the Fourth of July by Ron Kovic and The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien) are studied with the purpose of showing how all of them share a similar narrative structure that, through the personal experience of the characters and their trauma, reflects the process of patriotic enthusiasm, disappointment, and rejection that the Vietnam war provoked in the nation.

Este artículo pretende estudiar una serie de obras que recrean desde el recuerdo, la biografía y la ficción las vivencias de los soldados norteamericanos en la guerra de Vietnam. Son estas obras las que, más allá de los textos escritos por políticos, militares e historiadores, mejor han sabido ilustrar el impacto que la guerra tuvo sobre todo un país, Estados Unidos. Los textos seleccionados (First Blood de David Morrell, Paco's Story de Larry Curtis Heinemann, Born the Fourth of July de Ron Kovic y The Things They Carried de Tim O'Brien) son analizados en este artículo con el objetivo de demostrar cómo todos ellos comparten una estructura narrativa muy parecida que, a través de las vivencias personales de sus personajes y su trauma, refleja el proceso de exaltación patriótica, decepción y rechazo que la guerra de Vietnam provocó en la nación.
