La presencia de soldados y veteranos hispanos en Italia en época romana (siglos I-II d. C.)

Abstract

The participation of Hispanian soldiers in the Roman army was continuous from Republican times and intensified after the end of the civil wars and the institutionalisation of the Principate. Most of these soldiers served in the frontier regions of the Empire and in the Iberian Peninsula, although literary and epigraphic documentation confirms the presence of a small group of milites and veterani of Hispanic origin in Rome and in several cities in central and northern Italy during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. This study attempts to compile and analyse the references relating to these soldiers, with particular attention to the study of such important elements as onomastics, origin, military trajectory and the causes that motivated their presence in Italy.

La participación de hispanos en el ejército romano fue una constante desde época republicana y se intensificó tras el final de las guerras civiles y la instauración del Principado. La mayoría de estos soldados sirvió en las regiones fronterizas del Imperio y en la propia península ibérica, aunque la documentación literaria y epigráfica constata la presencia de un pequeño grupo de milites y veterani de origen hispano en Roma y en varias ciudades del centro y norte de Italia durante los siglos I y II d. C. El objetivo de este trabajo es recopilar y analizar las referencias relativas a estos soldados, prestando especial atención al estudio de elementos tan importantes como la onomástica, el origen, la trayectoria militar o las causas que motivaron su presencia en Italia.
