Arquitectura, vanguardia y distopía: la inversión de los proyectos utópicos en la ficción especulativa y su rol en la pantalla

Abstract

This paper approaches the inversion suffered by avant-garde architecture in cinema and the role this architecture plays as an influence either on the sets, as a location or as a digital environment in speculative fiction films. From Metropolis (Lang, 1927) to The Man in the High Castle (Spotnitz, 2015-2019), through Fahrenheit 451 (Truffaut, 1966) and Alphaville (Godard, 1965), among others, narratives of anticipation have been inspired, architecturally, by real world buildings that are reflected in these films as a mirror in which we can see the inversion of reality for the construction of the worst possible world. By means of a bibliographic review and the analysis of a selection of relevant films, we will see how utopia gives way to dystopia and how we can study these constructions from perspectives that allow us not only to analyse the inversion of those architectural projects over time, but also to promote an appreciation of architecture as film heritage.

El presente escrito tiene como objetivo aproximarse a la inversión sufrida por la arquitectura de vanguardia a ojos del cine y al papel que juegan dichas construcciones en los decorados, como localizaciones o como entorno digital en cintas de ficción especulativa. Desde Metropolis (Lang, 1927) hasta The Man in the High Castle (Spotnitz, 2015-2019), pasando por Fahrenheit 451 (Truffaut, 1966) o Alphaville (Godard, 1965), entre otras, el planteamiento de narrativas de anticipación bebe, arquitectónicamente, de unas realidades que se reflejan en estas cintas para que, a modo de espejo en el que se invierte la realidad, se muestre el peor de los mundos posibles a través de edificios proyectados, originalmente, como auténticas utopías. A través de una revisión bibliográfica y fílmica, veremos cómo se da paso de la utopía a la distopía y cómo podemos aproximarnos a esas construcciones desde otras perspectivas que permitan no solo analizar esa inversión de proyectos a través del tiempo, sino fomentar una puesta en valor de la arquitectura también como patrimonio fílmico.
