Escuchar con los ojos un cielo de vainilla: transformación de contenidos musicales en el cine contemporáneo: el caso de Abre los ojos / Vanilla Sky

Abstract

Creativity has been replaced by profitability in contemporary cinema. The consumer has the power, and productivity imposes its laws; consequently, we assist to a multiplicity of genres and styles (only apparent) that prioritizes the media over the message. In fiction cinema, “commerce” can be analyzed through the composing criteria of musical soundtracks: is the music produced for these movies really `contemporary’? Are there hegemonic models that influence different scores? How can the role of the composer be redefined when he has no competence in music? In order to answer to these questions, we propose the study of two examples: the music for the films Abre los ojos (Alejandro Amenábar, 1997) and the USA version (transformed and adapted) Vanilla sky (Cameron Crowe, 2001).
