In this chapter I study the main rhetorical tropes used by Lope de Vega to portray the English queen Elizabeth I in two of his long poems: "La Dragontea" and "Corona trágica". Lope constructs an image of Elizabeth based partially on the models of the bad ruler: one who acts moved by greed, lust, tyranny, treason and deceit. These are ideas rooted in the early modern discourse surrounding the limits of power and the characteristics of different approaches to exercising political responsibility―and, indirectly, of when it was legitimate to confront a monarch.es_ES
