Intelecetuales, propaganda y socialismo en Madrid. Una biografía histórica de Juan Almela Meliá (1882-1926)

Abstract

[ES] Esta tesis doctoral es una biografía histórica parcial de Juan Almela Meliá que abarca el periodo comprendido entre su nacimiento, en 1882, y el año 1926. El interés por la trayectoria biográfica de Meliá se debe a la actividad que desarrolló desde los primeros años del siglo XX como uno de los intelectuales y propagandistas más significativos del movimiento socialista en Madrid. La fuente fundamental de nuestra investigación ha sido la producción política y literaria de este autor, así como el conjunto de documentos y testimonios que nos han permitido reconstruir su biografía durante el periodo que es objeto de nuestra atención. La perspectiva analítica que hemos empleado en nuestra investigación es la propia de la historia intelectual. Amparándonos en algunos de sus últimos desarrollos, hemos reconstruido la vida de Meliá, decantándonos por potenciar su componente microhistórico. Desde un punto de vista metodológico, y debido al motivo que justifica nuestro interés por este personaje, el enfoque desde el que nos hemos aproximado a su compromiso con el movimiento socialista ha sido el de la historia de las culturas políticas. Todo ello ha dado lugar a una biografía histórica estructurada de forma cronológica, vehiculada a través del análisis de la producción de Meliá y muy conectada con la sucesión de las distintas revistas culturales editadas por los socialistas madrileños entre 1901 y 1917. Los resultados de nuestra investigación proyectan una visión matizada de la historia intelectual del socialismo español durante el primer tercio del siglo XX. Aunque las conclusiones más sólidas de esta tesis se circunscriben al caso madrileño y a las dos primeras décadas del siglo pasado, el análisis en profundidad de la vida y la obra de Meliá ofrecen una aproximación alternativa a la forma en la que se ha interpretado la relación de los intelectuales con el socialismo español y la posición ocupada por sus propagandistas en el campo intelectual. [EN] This doctoral thesis is a partial historical biography of Juan Almela Meliá covering the period between his birth in 1882 and 1926. The interest in Meliá's biographical trajectory is due to the activity he developed since the early years of the twentieth century as one of the most significant intellectuals and propagandists of the socialist movement in Madrid. The fundamental source of our research has been the political and literary production of this author, as well as the set of documents and testimonies that have allowed us to reconstruct his biography during the period that is the object of our attention. The analytical perspective used in our research is that of intellectual history. Based on some of its latest developments, we have reconstructed Meliá's life, choosing to enhance its microhistorical component. From a methodological point of view, and due to the reason that justifies our interest in this character, the approach from which we have analyzed his commitment to the socialist movement has been that of the history of political cultures. The result is a historical biography structured chronologically, articulated through the analysis of Meliá's production and closely connected to the succession of the different cultural magazines published by the Madrid socialists between 1901 and 1917. The results of our research project a refined vision of the intellectual history of Spanish socialism during the first third of the twentieth century. Although the most solid conclusions of this dissertation are circumscribed to Madrid and to the first two decades of the last century, the in-depth analysis of Meliá's life and work offers an alternative approach to the problematic relationship of the intellectuals and the socialist movement in Spain and the position occupied by its propagandists in the intellectual field.
