Abstract

Two important historical processes, the union of Iberian crowns and its impact on Brazil, and the process of Brazilian Independence, have in common the existence of teleological and anachronistic interpretations that prevent a correct analysis of what happened. This article analyses Spanish-Portuguese relations in the past with a focus on the period of Brazil's Independence, showing that Spain's participation was much more important than expected so far.
