“Aguardan el día en que un vapor les repatrie”: la imagen de los españoles repatriados en el diario ahora (1930-1936).

Abstract

[ES]El impacto de la recesión económica de los años treinta del siglo XX entre los emigrantes españoles en América generó una significativa diáspora de repatriados. El costo de las repatriaciones y las condiciones materiales extremadamente precarias que traían alarmaron a la administración republicana y tuvieron repercusión en los medios de comunicación. En este sentido, esta investigación se centra en estudiar la imagen de los españoles repatriados de Latinoamérica en el diario Ahora (1930-1936), analizando las emociones, acciones y representaciones asociadas a las personas de este grupo. Utilizando un enfoque cualitativo hemos realizado una revisión hemerográfica y un análisis crítico del discurso de las noticias publicadas sobre el tema en el diario Ahora. Los resultados muestran que Ahora priorizó un enfoque generalizante de los repatriados que ocultaba la diversidad interior del grupo y los relacionaba con ideas como fracaso, indigencia y pasividad. Este tipo de encuadre dificulta la creación de puentes empáticos y puede inducir al rechazo social. Se evidencia también que la cobertura de este fenómeno tuvo una función de alerta para evitar nuevas emigraciones. [EN]The impact of the economic recession of the 1930s among Spanish emigrants in America led to a significant wave of repatriation. The cost of the repatriations and the meager material possessions of the returnees alarmed the Republican administration and had considerable repercussions in the media. With this in mind, this paper focuses on the portrayal of Spanish repatriates from Latin America in the newspaper “Ahora” (1930-1936), and analyzes the emotions, actions, and representations associated with this people group. Following a qualitative approach, we carried out a hemerographic review and a critical analysis of the articles published on the subject in the newspaper “Ahora”. The results show that “Ahora” emphasized a generalized perspective towards the returnees, overlooking the inner diversity of the group, and connected them with concepts such as failure, extreme poverty, and passivity. This type of portrayal makes it difficult to build empathic bonds and relationships, and may lead to social rejection. It is also apparent that the coverage of this phenomenon was intended as a warning to prevent further emigration.
