El Colegio de San Antonio: la obra pía de Antonio de Vergas y Carvajal en la Salamanca del siglo XVIII

Abstract

[ESP] Durante la Edad Moderna existieron múltiples instituciones de recogida de niños expósitos y huérfanos en todas las ciudades de Europa. Salamanca no fue una excepción. A imitación de otras instituciones del estilo que existieron, el regidor Antonio de Vergas y Carvajal creó una institución de recogida de jóvenes a finales del siglo XVII. Se estudia a continuación el funcionamiento de la institución en la primera mitad del siglo XVIII, cuando el colegio seminario se regula a través de un amplio corpus legal, así como se analiza la vida del fundador, desconocida hasta la fecha, la cotidianidad colegial y las características de los internos a comienzos del siglo ilustrado.

[EN] During the Modern Age, several institutions were created in European cities to deal with the plight of abandoned children and orphans, and Salamanca was no exception. At the end of the seventeenth century, the alderman Antonio de Vergas y Carvajal founded an institution for the sole purpose of receiving young people, based on the prevailing model of other institutions. This study examines the functioning of the college during the first half of the 18th century, a .period characterized by the strict subjection of the seminary to a comprehensive legal framework. It also examines hitherto unknown aspects of the founder’s biography, sheds light on everyday life in the college, and explores the characteristics of its boarders at the dawn of the Enlightenment.
