Abstract

This paper explores the cycles of demographic fluctuation at a macro-regional scale occurring ca. 800 BC in the Duero basin, through the ‘archaeology of settlements’. The relative mobility and sustained weak demographic threshold in the second millennium BC are replaced by a cycle of steep demographic growth in the first millennium BC, leading to the proliferation of settlements in new settings, through the reduplication of village communities. It reappraises the role of small-scale migration as a social strategy in response to manifold factors.
