(Re)construcción identitaria y pertenencia de los mauricianos en la actualidad: el caso de Les Rochers de Poudre d'Or de Nathacha Appanah

Abstract

From the late 18th century onwards, there was a large influx of migration from India to Mauritius. After the abolition of slavery, British colonisers looked to Asian countries for cheap labour, especially India, where they hired workers to till the sugar cane fields. Since then, there has been a great cultural, linguistic, religious, and ethnic diversity living on the island. This historical moment is recounted by the French-speaking Mauritian author of Indian origin, Nathacha Appanah (1973-), in her first novel Les Rochers de Poudre d'Or (2003). We will use this literary work as a working corpus in order to reflect on the process of identity (re)construction of the migrants who inhabit this territory. Likewise, this imaginary will be used as a framework to theorize the importance of the representation and cohabitation of other identities within the same geopolitical space.

A partir de finales del siglo xviii se produjo una gran afluencia de migraciones desde la India hasta Mauricio. Tras la abolición de la esclavitud, los colonizadores británicos buscaron mano de obra barata en los países asiáticos, especialmente en la India. Allí contrataban a trabajadores para labrar los campos de caña de azúcar. Desde entonces existe una gran diversidad cultural, lingüística, religiosa y étnica conviviendo en la isla. Este momento histórico lo relata la autora francófona mauriciana de origen indio, Nathacha Appanah (1973-), en su primera novela, Les Rochers de Poudre d'Or (2003). Emplearemos como corpus de trabajo esta obra literaria con el fin de reflexionar sobre el proceso de (re)construcción identitaria de los migrantes que habitan este territorio. Igualmente, este imaginario se utilizará como marco para teorizar la importancia de la representación y la cohabitación de otras identidades dentro de un mismo espacio geopolítico.
