La historiografía española sobre salud y enfermedad en el siglo XVIII

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to offer an analysis of the main research topics that, in Spain, have dealt with health and disease in the 18th century. The knowledge about the questions linked to health and disease is a key issue to understand the societies of the past, contributing to deepen the understanding of this century from a social, political, and ideological perspective. Despite the strength of this type of studies in past decades, in the present moment the 18th century does not receive enough attention from historiography. However, far from being a fully explored period, there are still considerable gaps that could be filled by using underutilized sources to date, new questions, and new ways of scrutinizing the past.

El presente artículo tiene como objeto ofrecer un análisis de las principales líneas de investigación que, en España, se han ocupado de la salud y la enfermedad en el siglo XVIII. El conocimiento sobre los aspectos relacionados con la salud y la enfermedad constituye una pieza clave para interpretar las sociedades del pasado, contribuyendo a profundizar en la comprensión de esta centuria desde una perspectiva social, política e ideológica. A pesar de la pujanza de este tipo de estudios en décadas pasadas, en el momento actual el Setecientos no recibe excesiva atención por parte de la historiografía. Sin embargo, lejos de resultar un periodo agotado, aún persisten considerables vacíos que podrían mitigarse con el aprovechamiento de fuentes poco empleadas hasta la fecha y a partir de nuevas preguntas y formas de escrutar el pasado.
