La inscripción latina del monumento a Jovellanos de Oviedo

Abstract

We intend to study the Latin inscription that the General Assembly (Junta General) of the Principality of Asturias dedicated to Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos in 1798, in Oviedo, on the occasion of his appointment as Minister of Grace and Justice. We offer a new critical edition of the text and an analysis of its most relevant linguistic aspects. We also propose a new translation that is closer to the Latin text than the only one we know; this one is characterized by a majesty and elegance that the original text absolutely lacks, as can be deduced from the linguistic analysis. Finally, we make some considerations about the authorship of the text.

Nos proponemos estudiar la inscripción latina que la Junta General del Principado de Asturias dedicó en Oviedo, en 1798, a Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, con ocasión de su nombramiento como ministro de Gracia y Justicia. Ofrecemos una nueva edición crítica del texto y un análisis de sus aspectos lingüísticos más relevantes; también proponemos una nueva traducción más ajustada al texto latino que la única que conocemos; esta última se caracteriza por una majestuosidad y elegancia de las que, en absoluto, carece el texto original, como se desprende del análisis lingüístico. Por último, hacemos unas consideraciones sobre la autoría del texto.
