Susurros en las tinieblas. Las mujeres en el mundo rural valenciano durante la Baja Edad Media

Abstract

In this article, we analyse the situation of women in the countryside of the Kingdom of Valencia during the Late Middle Ages. The focus is on the members of the peasantry that is, those women who did not exercise any political or jurisdictional power. Our hypothesis is that they had a logical and active participation in the functioning of the domestic enterprises and in the social tissue of rural communities, through the implementation of a series of practices that conformed to dominant morality and, at the same time, acquired certain differentiating features. To do this, sources as diverse as royal registers, manor cartularies, notarial protocols, and municipal laws are analysed. The aim is to develop a first vision of the rural female group as a whole and to apprehend the transformations experienced by the condition of women in the Valencian countryside between the 13th and the 15th centuries.

En este artículo, se analiza la situación de las mujeres en el mundo rural valenciano durante la Baja Edad Media. La atención se focaliza en las integrantes de la clase campesina, es decir, aquellas mujeres que no ejercen ningún tipo de poder político o jurisdiccional. Se parte de la hipótesis de que tienen una lógica y activa participación en el funcionamiento de las empresas domésticas y en el tejido social de las comunidades rurales, mediante la implementación de una serie de prácticas que se ajustan a la moralidad imperante y, al mismo tiempo, adquieren ciertos rasgos diferenciadores. Para ello, se analizan fuentes tan diversas como registros reales, cartularios señoriales, protocolos notariales y ordenanzas municipales. El objetivo es elaborar una primera visión del colectivo femenino en su conjunto y aprehender las transformaciones que experimenta la condición de las mujeres en el mundo rural entre los siglos XIII-XV.
