Tiberio Claudio Candido como ejemplo del ascenso de los personajes de origen africano en el gobierno de Septimio Severo

Abstract

In this article we will look at the figure of the Numidian general Tiberius Claudius Candidus, who obtained honours and important posts in the course of the 2nd-3rd centuries AD under the favour of the emperor Lucius Septimius Severus. He played a very important role in the wars of succession of Septimius Severus to the throne after the death of Commodus in 192 A.D. His life shows us at first hand the progressive incorporation of people from the provinces into positions of great responsibility. We know of this rise thanks to some epigraphic remains, together with the interpretation of the story conveyed to us by the written sources.

En el presente artículo pretendemos acercarnos a la figura del general númida Tiberio Claudio Candido, que obtuvo honores y cargos de importancia en el transcurso de los siglos II-III d.C. bajo el favor del emperador Lucio Septimio Severo. Desarrolló un papel importantísimo en las guerras de sucesión de Septimio Severo al trono tras la muerte de Cómodo en 192 d.C. Su vida nos muestra de primera mano la progresiva incorporación de personajes de las provincias a puestos de gran responsabilidad. Este ascenso lo conocemos gracias a algunos restos epigráficos junto a la interpretación del relato que nos transmiten las fuentes escritas.
