Judíos entre cristianos: Realidades de convivencia cotidiana en el reino visigodo

Abstract

The presence of Jews in the Iberian Peninsula clashed head-on with the project of unity of the kingdom based on a Catholic identity, proposed both by the monarchy and the episcopate. For this reason, attempts were made to undermine the rights of the Jews and to limit the civil and religious freedom of the Jewish communities scattered throughout Hispania. However, in the face of this strong anti-Judaism advocated by the authorities and reflected in legislation, conciliar canons and the so-called adversus Iudaeos literature, it seems to be clear that the Jews continued to be fully integrated among the rest of the population, enjoying the support of people from different social strata. The aim of this article is therefore to explore the realities of everyday coexistence that can be glimpsed in the various sources between the Jewish and Christian populations.

La presencia de judíos en la Península Ibérica chocaba frontalmente con el proyecto de unidad del reino en base a una identidad católica, propuesto tanto desde la monarquía como desde el episcopado. Por este motivo, se trató de menoscabar los derechos de los judíos y de limitar la libertad civil y religiosa de las comunidades judaicas diseminadas por Hispania. Sin embargo, frente a este fuerte antijudaísmo propugnado desde el poder y que ha quedado reflejado en la legislación, los cánones conciliares y la llamada literatura adversus Iudaeos, parece verse también con claridad que los judíos continuaron estando plenamente integrados entre el resto de la población, gozando de apoyos de gente de los distintos estratos sociales. Por tanto, el objetivo de este artículo es explorar las realidades de convivencia cotidianas que se pueden entrever en las distintas fuentes entre las poblaciones judías y cristianas.
