Relaciones hispani-indígenas en la frontera norte: el presidio como instrumento de control social (siglo XVIII)

Abstract

[ES] Durante el siglo XVIII los españoles tendieron a repensar la figura del indio y a convertirlo en un sujeto útil. Igualmente, las nuevas ideas dadas por la Ilustración permitieron la apertura de nuevos sistemas de subordinación que contravenían los poderes del Antiguo Régimen. Así pues, estas ideas aplicadas a una institución fronteriza como el presidio provocaron una evolución en el mismo hasta llegar a ser un órgano de control social. Igualmente, se tendió al control y conducción de los comportamientos de los indígenas norteños, dotándoles de una cierta racionalidad para convertirlos en vasallos útiles.

[EN] During the eighteenth century the Spaniards tended to rethink the figure of the Indian and to make him a useful subject. Also, the new ideas given by the Enlightenment allowed the opening of new systems of subordination that contravened the powers of the Old Regime. Thus, these ideas applied to a border institution such as the prison caused an evolution in it until it became an organ of social control. Likewise, they tended to control and conduct the behavior of the northern Indians, giving them a certain rationality to turn them into useful vassals.
