Las siete poleis del Apocalipsis. Una aproximación social y epigráfica a la provincia de Asia

Abstract

Las cartas dirigidas a siete iglesias de Asia constituyen uno de los principales elementos del comienzo del Apocalipsis. A pesar de los evidentes problemas de interpretación de este libro del Nuevo Testamento, la información proporcionada por el elevado número de inscripciones que se conservan en Éfeso, Esmirna, Pérgamo, Tiatira, Sardes, Filadelfia y Laodicea permiten una aproximación al contexto social en el que se han de situar esos textos. Este artículo estudia esta evidencia y aborda cuestiones relativas al culto imperial, la importancia de la diáspora judía y otros puntos de intersección entre el hábito epigráfico de la provincia y las comunidades cristianas que habrían estado presentes en estas siete ciudades.

The letters addressed to seven churches in Asia constitute one of the main elements of the beginning of the Apocalypse (Revelation). Despite the obvious problems of interpreting this book of the New Testament, the information provided by the large number of inscriptions surviving from Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyateira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea allow an approximation of the social context in which those texts must be placed. This article examines this evidence and explores questions related to imperial cult, the importance of the Jewish Diaspora and other points of intersection between the epigraphic habit of the province and the Christian communities that would have been present in these seven cities.
