A socio-historical analysis of the 2020 corona pandemic: between old and new virtues and vices

Abstract

[ES] El artículo propone un análisis sociohistórico de la pandemia de la COVID-19, alejándose tanto de lecturas apocalípticas como de expectativas utópicas sobre el “día después”. A partir de una doble clave pasado/presente y solidaridades/tensiones, se examinan las continuidades y rupturas que la crisis sanitaria activa en diferentes niveles. En el plano macro se analizan las formas de solidaridad interestatal y su ambivalencia geopolítica, así como la reactivación de debates sobre la globalización y el papel de potencias como China, Rusia, Estados Unidos y la Unión Europea. En el plano meso se estudian las iniciativas de solidaridad intranacional, el resurgir de la sociedad civil y, al mismo tiempo, la intensificación de conflictos en torno a seguridad y libertades, violencia de género y racismo. Finalmente, se introduce el nivel micro, donde el individuo aparece como encrucijada decisiva entre la consolidación de redes de solidaridad y el repliegue hacia el miedo y la desconfianza. El texto concluye defendiendo la esperanza, más que el optimismo, en la capacidad transformadora de las prácticas solidarias que emerjan de esta experiencia. [EN] The article offers a socio-historical analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic, rejecting both apocalyptic narratives and celebratory visions of a post-crisis “new world”. Working with a double axis of past/present and solidarities/tensions, it investigates how the health crisis reactivates long-standing dynamics while generating new ones at different levels. At the macro level, it examines forms of inter-state solidarity and their geopolitical ambivalence, alongside renewed debates on globalization and the shifting roles of China, Russia, the United States and the European Union. At the meso level, it explores intra-national solidarities, the re-emergence of civil society initiatives, and the parallel intensification of conflicts around security versus freedom, gender-based violence and racism. Finally, it introduces the micro level, where individuals are framed as the key crossroads between the consolidation of solidarity networks and a retreat into fear and mistrust. The article concludes by advocating hope rather than optimism, stressing that any meaningful transformation will depend on the practices of solidarity that individuals and communities choose to sustain beyond the pandemic.
