dc.description	El retrato de Martha Carr, pintado por Thomas Lawrence, es una de las obras más destacadas de la colección británica del Museo del Prado. A pesar de ello, las circunstancias de la creación del cuadro y su llegada a España aún no habían sido objeto de investigación académica. Este trabajo pretende llenar este vacío aportando nueva información sobre el contexto y la datación de la creación del cuadro, así como sobre la biografía de la modelo, basándose en fuentes inéditas de archivos británicos y españoles, y en el análisis estilístico de la obra. Asimismo, se examinan los pormenores de la adquisición de la obra a los marchantes londinenses Appleby Bros por parte del Museo del Prado en 1959, una complicada transacción en la que desempeñó un importante papel la mediación del director del Instituto Español de Londres, el historiador del arte Xavier de Salas.	es_ES
dc.description.abstract	[EN] One of the Prado’s first major acquisitions of a British painting was a portrait by Thomas Lawrence, purchased in 1959 for the museum’s ‘British Paintings Room’, which had been opened the previous year. New information about the sitter, Martha Carr, allows the painting to be dated to around the time of her marriage, in November 1790. It appears to have been originally paired with a lost portrait by Lawrence of her husband, Thomas Chinnal Porter.	es_ES
