Ininteligibilidad, desvíos lingüísticos y voces narradoras múltiples: análisis de sus funciones en La saga/fuga de J. B. de Gonzalo Torrente Ballester

Abstract

[ES]Con La saga/fuga de J. B. (1972), Gonzalo Torrente Ballester consigue crear una novela que impulsa una constante reflexión sobre distintas cuestiones lingüístico-comunicativas. En ella, los personajes critican la falta de eficacia propia del lenguaje oral y escrito, destacando su incapacidad para garantizar una comunicación clara, precisa y sin ambigüedades. Además, acabarán por convertirse en testigos del potencial semántico y pragmático de las palabras, incluso cuando estas resultan ininteligibles. Por lo que atañe al mundo extradiegético, el lector de La saga/fuga de J. B. se enfrenta a una novela cuyo autor juega con la estructura narrativa y la cohesión del texto literario. Torrente Ballester, de hecho, recurre a desvíos deliberados en lo que respecta a la voz narradora, que se demuestra cambiante, incoherente y a menudo difícil de identificar con un narrador-personaje concreto. Mediante un acercamiento que involucra también los estudios sobre esta obra dedicados a las dicotomías Historia versus historia y poder versus disidencia, este trabajo se propone examinar las posibles razones que subyacen a dichas referencias metalingüísticas y a las peculiares estrategias narratológicas que caracterizan la novela. (1972), Gonzalo Torrente Ballester manages to create a novel that encourages both the reader and the characters to engage in a constant reflection on several linguistic and communicative issues. In this novel, the characters criticize the inefficacy of both spoken and written language, emphasizing its inability to ensure clear, precise, and unambiguous communication. Furthermore, they become witnesses to the semantic and pragmatic potential of words, even when those words turn out to be unintelligible. As for the extradiegetic world, the reader of La saga/fuga de J. B. faces a novel in which the author consciously plays with both the narrative structure and the cohesion of the literary text. In fact, Torrente Ballester introduces deliberate deviations regarding the narrative voice, which proves to be changing, incoherent, and often difficult to identify with a specific narrator-character. Through an approach that also considers studies of this work focused on the dichotomies History versus history and power versus dissent, this paper aims to examine the possible reasons underlying those metalinguistic references, and the peculiar narratological strategies that define the novel.
