Uranio, un elemento poco conocido

Abstract

El uranio se asocia a radiactividad y sin embargo sus isótopos más comunes presentan una activad muy baja,propiedad que ha podido utilizarse para datar la antigüedad de la Tierra. Su importancia es clave para abastecer parte de la demanda de electricidad mundial. Después de varios años a precios muy baratos el precio del concentrado nodeja de subir. Hay 1.500 toneladas de uranio altamente enriquecido sobrante de la Guerra Fría, su dilución y uso encentrales nucleares convencionales permitirían su eliminación y favorecerían una disminución de precios. Elcombustible gastado conserva aún un alto poder energético, su reprocesado a medio plazo parece inevitable.

Its importance is vitalto supply electricity from nuclear power. For some years the price of concentratewas decreasing. However, in the last years it has increased dramatically. There are still about 1,500 t of high enrichment uranium from the Cold War. Their blending and use in nuclear conventionalpower stations would allow their disappearance and the fall of prices. The nuclear fuel waste still keeps a highenergetic power. Its reprocessing in a long term seems to be inevitable.
