El cine como documento histórico: el SIDA en 25 años de cine

Abstract

[ES] Fue en el verano de hace 25 años cuando la sociedad en general y la comunidad científica en particular se encontraron entre sus manos con una enfermedad desconocida hasta entonces, la que más tarde sería conocida como el Síndrome de Inmunodeficiencia Adquirida (SIDA). Los miedos y las incertidumbres iniciales, la respuesta de los diferentes grupos sociales, las batallas contra la ignorancia, las luchas por el acceso a un tratamiento, la afectación de los individuos enfermos y su entorno han sido frecuentemente reflejados en diversos largometrajes que por haber sido realizados durante el tiempo de la epidemia pueden ser considerados como verdaderos documentos históricos, merecedoresde estudio por las generaciones venideras. Películas como En el filo de la duda/And the Band Played On, Compañeros inseparables/LongtimeCompanion, Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt, Las noches salvajes/Les Nuits Fauves, Angels in America, Yesterday y My brother...Nikhil, entre otras, marcan un cuarto de siglo de la historia del SIDA para que el mundo no se olvide.

[EN] It was 25 years ago, in the summer of 1981, when society as a whole and particularly the scientific community was faced with an unknown disease that came later to be known as Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Several films have sufficiently reflected theinitial fears and uncertainty, the responses of the different social groups, the fight against ignorance, the urge of having access to treatment and the suffering of the infected individuals and their families that were due to this disease. Taking into account that these movies were filmed when these epidemics took place they can actually be considered as true historical documents that deserve being analysed by the generations to come. Films such as And The Band Played On; Long time Companion; Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt; Les Nuites Fauves; Angels in America; Yesterday and My Brother... Nikhil have marked 25 years of AIDS history that should not be forgotten by the world.
