Abstract

[ES] La película Despertares es el testimonio del sueño de un neurólogo que devolvió transitoriamente la libertad a sus pacientes postencefalíticos, paralizados por un parkinsonismo durante décadas, tratándolos con el que fue considerado un medicamento milagroso, la Ldopa. Ese despertar evidenció la tragedia que tenían ante sus ojos: el paso del tiempo que no todos admitían. El dilema de los efectos adversos frente a los beneficios, por muy evidentes que parezcan, es un terreno difícil en la relación médico-paciente. Ambos deben aceptar la realidad. Toda una lección de ética médica y del valor de la existencia.

[EN] The film Awakenings is testimony to the dream of a neurologist who transiently gave back freedom to his post-encephalitis patients, paralyzed by Parkinson s disease for decades, treating them with what was considered a miracle drug: L-dopa. These awakenings openedhis eyes to the tragedy: the passage of time that not all of the patients could admit to having lost. The dichotomy between the benefits and adverse side effects, however evident they seem, is a difficult area in the doctor-patient relationship. Both must accept the reality of the situation. The film is indeed a masterful depiction of medical ethics and of the value of existence.
