Comercio con América y títulos de nobleza: Cádiz en el siglo XVIII

Abstract

[ES] El comercio con América hizo posible, durante la Edad Moderna, la formación de grandes fortunas. Algunas de las más importantes se concentraron en el Cádiz del siglo XVIII, donde gran parte de los negociantes, incluidos los extranjeros, mostraron ambiciones nobiliarias. Algunos de ellos lograron incluso la concesión de un título de Castilla, y adoptaron formas de vida muy similares a las de la nobleza tradicional castellana. Su procedencia, el origen de su riqueza, los pasos seguidos en su ascensión social, sus costumbres y comportamiento y la evolución de sus familias tras la concesión del título nobiliario, son asuntos tratados en este estudio.

[EN] Trading with America made, during the Middle Age, the formation of great fortunes possible. Some of the most important ones concentrated in 18 Century Cádiz, where a great part of the merchants, including the foreign ones, showed noble ambitions. Some of them even succeeded in the concession of a title of Castile, and adopted very similar ways of life to the ones of the traditional Castilian nobility. Its source, the origin its wealth, the steps followed in its social accession, its customs and behaviour and the development of its families after the concession of the noble title, are some of the matters dealt with in this research.
