Un traductor de la ciencia ilustrada: Súarez y Núñez

Abstract

[ES] Hay que insistir en la importancia de las traducciones al castellano de los libros franceses sobre ciencia básica y aplicada, como base indispensable de la Ilustración española en el siglo XVIII, que no se limita a las mentalidades ni a los deseos de emancipación del Antiguo Régimen. Uno de los traductores más activos pero también más olvidado es el madrileño Miguel Gerónimo y Núñez, que murió a los 58 años después de haber publicado 26 obras de tecnología aplicada a la agricultura, a la industria y al comercio de otras tantas obras de autores franceses, como Mollet, Macquer, Duhamel, Delormois, Ribacourt y otros, ilustradas siempre con láminas explicativas de las máquinas propuestas. Académico de Sevilla y Socio de la Economía Matritense, fue durante quince años el más activo miembro de la sección de Artes y Oficios, muriendo en la más penosa indigencia en 1791, aunque llegó a ser agente fiscal de la Junta de Comercio, Moneda y Minas.

[EN] The importance of the translation to Spanish of French books about basic and applied science is stressed as the indispensable basis of the Spanish Enlightenment in the 18th century, which was not limited to mentalities and desires for emancipation from the ancien regime. One of the most active translators but also the most forgotten was Miguel Gerónimo Suárez y Nuñez from Madrid, who died at age 58 after having published 26 books on technology applied to agriculture, industry and trade by French authorssuch as Mollet, Macquer, Duhamel, Delormois, Ribacourt and others, which included explanatory illustrations of the machines proposed. He was a Member of the Academy of Seville and the Económica Matritense and for fifteen years the most active member of the section of Arts and Trades. He died as a pitiful indigent in 1791, even though he had become a Fiscal Agent of the Board of Commerce, Currency and Mines.
