¿Un Reino más para la monarquía? Felipe IV, Irlanda y la guerra civil inglesa, 1641-1649

Abstract

[ES] La segunda mitad del reinado de Felipe IV (1640-1665) continúa siendo un "período oscuro". Sin embargo, fue durante aquellos años cuando la Monarquía Hispánica tuvo que afrontar la crisis decisiva de su continuidad como potencia europea, y ante una nueva coyuntura que la política exterior tradicional de los Austrias españoles no fue capaz de superar con éxito. La actitud de Felipe IV ante la rebelión irlandesa de 1641 mostró el intento de adaptación de Madrid a sus fuerzas reales, pero sólo para dirigirlas hacia unos objetivos mucho más ambiciosos, y con resultados negativos. Las décadas centrales del siglo XVII —más que los años de Olivares— fueron las que señalaron el fracaso terminal de Madrid en la escena europea.

[EN] ABSTRACT: The second half of the reign of Philip IV (1640-1665) is still an "obscure period". Nevertheless it was during that years when the Hispanic Monarchy had to confront the decisive crisis of continuity like european power, and faced with a new conjuncture that the traditional foreign policy of the Spanish Habsburgs could not overcome. The attitude of Philip IV before the Irish Rebellion in 1641 showed the attempt of Madrid to adapt to his real force, but only to direct it towards very much ambitious objectives, and with negative results. That period —more than Olivares 's years— decided the failure of Madrid on the european scene.
