La idea de progreso en el estudio del arte parietal paleolítico: pasado, presente y… ¿futuro?

Abstract

[ES] El presente artículo examina el pasado, el presente y el futuro de la idea de “progreso” en la interpretación del arte parietal paleolítico. En la primera parte, los autores analizan cómo los principales especialistas del siglo XX (Breuil y Leroi- Gourhan) consideraron que el arte parietal había evolucionado desde representaciones abstractas o muy simples hasta composiciones complejas caracterizadas por el dominio de la perspectiva y el uso de la policromía. De este modo, el “paradigma del progreso” se constituyó en la interpretación dominante hasta finales del siglo XX. En la segunda parte, los autores muestran cómo algunos acontecimientos recientes, particularmente la datación de las pinturas de Chauvet, han provocado la crisis de dicho paradigma. Por último, los autores reflexionan a propósito del futuro de la idea de “progreso” en el estudio del arte paleolítico.

[EN] This article analyses the past, present, future notions of “progress” in the study of Palaeolithic art. In the first section, we suggest that the widespread belief in the unilinear evolution of Palaeolithic art from simplest to more complex representations (an idea common to both Breuil and Leroi-Gourhan’s chronologies) constituted the dominant paradigm in the field until the end of the twentieth century. In the second section, we proposed that recent events, particularly the dating of Chauvet paintings, have provoked a crisis of the aforementioned paradigm. We conclude with some thoughts about the future of the idea of “progress” in the framework of Palaeolithic art studies.
