El cristianismo y la transmisión de la educación clásica: algunas notas a partir del epistolario de san Jerónimo

Abstract

RESUMEN: A mediados del siglo IV se inicia el período de mayor expansión del cristianismo en el Imperio romano occidental. En este proceso van a verse implicados, como cabezas visibles, un buen número de cristianos cultivados. Entre ellos destaca un provincial de clase media, Jerónimo, siendo posible detectar a través de su Epistolario, centro de nuestro estudio, los términos en que se produce la aceptación por la Iglesia del sistema educativo clásico basado en las artes liberales.

ABSTRACT: In the middle of the IV century the period of the biggest expansion of Christianism begins in the western Roman Empire. Several cultivated Christians get remarkably involved in this process. Jerome, a middle class provincial, stands out from these erudites. His Epistles —the centre of our research— enable us to detected the terms in which the Church accepts the classical educational system based on liberal arts.
