La retórica del siglo IV. Espacios de integración y exclusión del bárbaro.

Abstract

[ES] Este trabajo pretende analizar los mecanismos de mistificación de la realidad de los discursos retóricos del siglo IV, especialmente de los panegíricos latinos del siglo IV, y otros textos encomiásticos. La visión tradicionalista de estos oradores tardíos se contradice con la realidad del momento en que son pronunciados, desvelando la ideología de una aristocracia que, aparentemente, conserva una imagen del bárbaro estereotipada y sin trazas de haber evolucionado desde los primeros siglos del Imperio. Sin embargo los enunciados sobre el «otro» chocan con una realidad cambiante en la cual el bárbaro forma parte plenamente de la vida económica y militar de Roma. Son, en definitiva, propuestas ideologizantes de una aristocracia senatorial empeñada en mantener las diferencias socio-económicas en el nivel discursivo.

[EN] The aim of this work is to analyse the mechanisms of mystification of reality in the rhetorical speeches of the 4th century, particularly the 4th century Latin panegyrics and other encomiastic texts. The traditionalist view of these orators from Late Antiquity is in contradiction with the actual situation of the moment at which they are given, thus revealing the ideology of an aristocracy which, apparently, preserves an image of the stereotyped barbarian, with no indication of having evolved since the first centuries of the Empire. However, these statements about the «other» clash with a changing reality in which the barbarian is fully a part of the economic and military life of Rome. What they are, in short, are the ideological proposals of a senatorial aristocracy bent on maintaining the socio-economic differences at the level of discourse.
